Before you arrive

Even before you come to Canada, there are steps you can take to make the transition easier.

  • Consult Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Before you leave checklist.
  • Print a copy of Planning to Work in Canada? An essential workbook for newcomers. Follow the steps and keep track of the information you learn.
  • Find the regulatory body or apprenticeship authority for your job by using the Working in Canada Tool. It will also help you understand the skills required for your job and the differences in your profession between one destination in Canada and another. Consult the website of the appropriate regulatory body or apprenticeship authority to find information on licensing, eligibility requirements, foreign credential recognition, registration fees and who to contact.
  • Find out if you can begin the assessment of your credentials while you are still in your home country.
  • Find out what the language requirements are for your intended job by reviewing the Language Assessment section of the “Working in Canada Report.” Determine if you need to improve your language skills to meet these requirements.
  • Start your job search.
  • Consult the Going to Canada website and the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website to find information and services when planning a temporary stay or making Canada your new home.
  • Consult these provincial and territorial immigration websites to help you decide where you would like to live.
  • Don’t be a victim of fraud. Find out more about immigration representatives.
